Creates a Conductive Path: The clamp itself is made of highly conductive metal (typically copper or aluminum). Its jaw (a strong alligator clip or permanent magnetic clamp) provides a reliable connection to the equipment that needs grounding.
Connects to Earth: A flexible, high-conductivity cable connects the clamp to a verified, reliable grounding system (like a grounded rod or grid).
Dissipates Charge: Once a secure connection is established between the equipment and the earth, it creates a very low-resistance path. The accumulated static charge flows safely and instantly through this path to the ground, equalizing the electrical potential of the equipment with the earth (bringing it to zero voltage).
Eliminates Spark Potential: The ultimate goal is to eliminate any potential difference (voltage) between the equipment and the ground, and between different pieces of equipment. Without a potential difference, no spark can occur.
Step 1: Connect to the Ground Point
First, securely connect the ground end of the clamp's cable (usually a terminal or a second clip) to a verified, dedicated grounding system. Never connect to questionable points like water pipes, guardrails, or door frames.
Step 2: Connect to the Equipment
Firmly attach the clamp's jaw to a bare metal point on the equipment to be grounded (e.g., the tank truck's chassis, a metal drum).
Crucial Point: It must be connected to bare, unpainted metal to ensure a conductive contact. Avoid painted, rusty, or greasy surfaces. If necessary, scrape off a small area to expose clean metal.
For Magnetic Clamps: Ensure the full magnetic surface is flush and firmly adhered to the metal.
Step 3: Verify Connection (For Intelligent Clamps)
Observe the clamp's indicator. A steady green light and/or a continuous tone confirms that the circuit resistance is acceptable and it is safe to proceed with operations.
If a visual/audio alarm (red light/no light) is active, immediately check both connection points until the alarm clears.
Step 4: Perform the Operation
Only after confirming a reliable grounding connection is established should you begin the transfer, mixing, or sampling operation.
Step 5: Disconnect After Operation
After the operation is complete and all equipment has been shut down, disconnect the clamp in this order: First, remove the clamp from the Equipment. Then, disconnect it from the Ground point. This ensures the equipment remains grounded throughout the entire process.
